Collaboration

Collaboration

Collaborations can invite challenging questions and unexpected concepts, leading to rewarding and inspiring results. Collaborating enables me to be both a learner and teacher and fulfills my desire to investigate the world and share ideas with others.

As a longtime collaborator, I’ve worked with visual artists, writers, and teachers to create works of art and community experiences. I love how working with another person can take us down paths we did not consider. I am interested in expanding my range of collaborative experiences to include partnerships with people in fields such as science, medicine, and botany.

Hedgerow

A half-mile long public roadway intervention with visual artist Laurie Lundquist. This project involved the removal of a hedge of sour orange trees that had served as a road divider for decades and the installation of a privacy wall. Laurie and I considered two-toned designs for a concrete block wall (based on the surrounding desert colors), that included sections of Morse Code spelling out phrases like “orange blossoms” and “orange trees.” We also designed sculptural elements that stylistically interpreted the orange hedge with wavy “tree trunks” and colorful “leaves.”

River Then, River Now, River Future

A collaboration with ceramic artist Jeff East, resulting in a 545-fool-long ceramic mosaic mural. This project involved thousands of students and community members over a four-year period. The finished mural engages passersby along Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona.
